"I have dressed this way for forty years, since I decided to be a bacha posh, woman dressed as a man."(2)
I cannot imagine being forced to dress like a boy as a child for safety reasons. This is a sad reality that many young girls had to go through during their childhood in Afghanistan. If a family did not have a young boy in it, they would pick one of their daughters to dress as one in order to do the things that a son would do if they had one. At a certain age, the girls would be allowed to start dressing as a girl and start living their life publicly as a young woman. However, what happens to the young girls "Was it this outfit that had led me there, to the US Department of State?"(2) Although being different might not be encouraged in your family or your culture, somewhere around the world some one is looking at you in amazement. "Among Women from all over the world chosen to receive the award for Most Courageous Women of the World?"(2) Sometimes when you receive a prestigious award, you question if you deserve it. To be in the same room as "Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Clinton" (1) is an honor that most people would not take likely. Being true to yourself and to who you are can take you far in life, if you let it.
who decide they do not want to cross back over? This is something that would take a lot of courage and strength to do. Going against what is considered normal is something that will always be met with some form of opposition. However, once you are able to overcome these trials and tribulations, you are usually celebrated in some way.

"I never knew my date of birth." (9)
Growing up, my birthday was a day that I looked forward to every year. Counting down to when I'm a year older and get more privileges. Having an older brother made me look forward to the days when  I could get my own cell phone, go to parties, getting my drivers license, and have the freedom that I did not yet have. I cannot imagine not knowing what day I was born or the exact year. "I do not have a birth certificate." (9) Not having any identification or any record of existence would cause my to question my worth. Unfortunately, this is most likely considered the norm for many people around the world. However, I'm sure it makes hearing stories about the time you were born that much more special. "She remembered everything else, for when I came out of her belly, my parents wondered if I was going to survive." (9) Every story has so much meaning and value. My parents have probably told me a million stories from when I was born and they could probably still still about them if I asked. Not only is it hard on the child not knowing much about their "Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things." (Robert B.)
birth, but imagine how the parents feel. Not being able to answer their child's burning questions would be hard for any parent I imagine. Living in the United States has afforded us with so many blessings that sometimes we don't even recognize.
