"I have dressed this way for forty years, since I decided to be a bacha posh, woman dressed as a man."(2)   I cannot imagine being forced to dress like a boy as a child for safety reasons. This is a sad reality that many young girls had to go through during their childhood in Afghanistan. If a family did not have a young boy in it, they would pick one of their daughters to dress as one in order to do the things that a son would do if they had one. At a certain age, the girls would be allowed to start dressing as a girl and start living their life publicly as a young woman.
